While the Industrial Revolution enabled us to increase the quantity of work performed, the Information Revolution will hugely improve the quality of the work we perform by dramatically reducing human error and increasing the value added by each employee decision. Since improving human decisions is the principal means by which information technology (IT) improves both individual and collective employee performance, private and public institutions are redesigning both their organizational structures and their individual jobs to enable their rank-and-file employees to exploit the productive power of IT. In the process, they are making continuous, feedback-based performance improvement – heuristics – the underlying internal operating principle of modern enterprise.
